Calling all vintage guitar enthusiasts and Gibson aficionados! The iconic Firebird gets a modern makeover with the return of the highly sought-after “Platypus” model. This limited-edition release combines the classic Firebird aesthetics with unique features, making it a true collector’s dream.

A Blend of Tradition and Innovation

The Platypus name originates from its distinct headstock design. Unlike the traditional Firebird’s “reverse” headstock with banjo tuners, the Platypus boasts a flat, “platypus-shaped” headstock equipped with Grover Mini Rotomatic tuners.

This unique feature pays homage to a small batch of transitional Firebirds produced in 1965, making the new Platypus a true nod to Gibson’s history.

Beyond the Headstock

The Platypus isn’t just about the headstock. This guitar breaks from tradition with a set-neck construction, a departure from the typical Firebird’s through-neck design. This change in construction offers a distinct playing experience and tonal characteristics for players seeking a different feel.

We would also guess that iit is a lot cheaper to manufacture compared to the thru-neck design of the regular Firebird models, plus these dont have the stepped headstock either, so it is a lot easier to build for Gibson. If you want these features, you’ll need to opt for a Custom Shop Firebird model instead.

Classic Firebird Tone with Modern Touches

At its core, the Platypus delivers the unmistakable Firebird sound. Alnico V-loaded mini-humbuckers power the guitar, providing a punchy and versatile tone palette. This deviates slightly from the original Platypus models known for their P-90 pickups, offering a unique twist on the vintage formula.

The Platypus features modern appointments like a Graph Tech nut, an aluminum Nashville Tune-o-matic bridge, and Grover Mini Rotomatic tuners for smooth playability and exceptional tuning stability. These features cater to modern players’ needs while maintaining the classic Firebird’s essence.

  1. Nope, there’s nothing innovative about the guitar.

It lost the neck-thru, it didn’t get the beautiful carved headstock back, and some of the ergonomics are gone too.

If only the Firebird had been treated like the Slash Firebird, but this is just a downgrade that is now being sold for even more. This is a “Volkswagen” for the price of a “Porsche”.

Pretty much every LTD Phoenix is closer to a Firebird V than Gibson’s own Firebird AND has by far better specs.

“Reissue” to have back what till 2017 every “Standard” Firebird V had? A luthier can build you the thing for half the price.

And IF I want a set-neck Firebird I can get a Japanese Tokai instead.

Epiphone? Epiphone now has Fender-like prices. Sorry, for THAT prices I want a choice if I want that Maestro trem or not. And I want better specs. We are speaking about €2.000 for a guitar made in China. A guitar as expensive as an original Gibson Firebird “Standard” would be.

I’m done with Gibson. For good.

The Firebird V was the ONLY reason why I cared for Gibson. And now I’m ready to give up on that beautiful guitars.
