Periphery mastermind Misha Mansoor has officially revealed his latest collaboration with the Jackson Custom Shop: a limited-edition Baritone Surfcaster that blends vintage “relic” aesthetics with high-performance djent specs.
The progressive metal pioneer is no stranger to signature gear, but his newest offering—the Jackson Custom Shop USA Signature Misha Mansoor Baritone Surfcaster—is a departure from his usual “super-strat” designs. This release isn’t just a collector’s piece; Mansoor confirms the guitar played a pivotal role in shaping the sound of the upcoming Periphery album, A Pale White Dot.
However, premium craftsmanship comes at a premium price. This Master Built machine carries a staggering RRP of $9,000 (£8,099).
Vintage Looks, Modern Muscle
The Baritone Surfcaster is the brainchild of Mansoor and Principal Master Builder Pat Campolattano. Dressed in a “striking” Army Drab Green Nitro-Relic finish, the guitar looks like a forgotten relic from a bygone era, but under the hood, it is a precision tool for modern metal.
“The guitar had to exist between two worlds,” Mansoor explained in a recent Jackson launch video. “It’s turned out to be a bit of a ‘sleeper’ for shredding.”

Key Specifications: Built for the Low End
To handle the “insane” clarity required for Periphery’s complex arrangements, the Surfcaster is packed with elite hardware:
-
30” Baritone Scale Length: Designed to maintain tension on thick string gauges for ultra-low tunings.
-
Bare Knuckle Juggernaut Pickups: Delivering punchy low-mids and highs that Jackson describes as cutting like a “sharpened machete.”
-
Roasted Ash Body & Quartersawn Maple Neck: The caramelized flame neck offers maximum stability against warping and enhanced resonance.
-
20” Radius Fretboard: An ultra-flat surface with stainless steel frets, perfect for technical playing and preventing “fretting out” during wide bends.
-
Modern Reliability: Equipped with a Hipshot fixed bridge, locking tuners, and Luminlay side dots for visibility on dark stages.

The Sound of the New Periphery Album
Perhaps the most exciting news for fans is the guitar’s influence on Periphery’s seventh studio effort. Mansoor revealed that a “substantial” portion of the new record was tracked using this specific Surfcaster.
“I didn’t expect it to inspire me so much,” Mansoor admitted. He noted that even with the low E string tuned down to a B-flat, the clarity remained “insane.” The inspiration was contagious, with bandmates Jake Bowen and Mark Holcomb also utilizing the instrument during sessions for A Pale White Dot, which is set for release on May 15 via 3DOT Recordings.

A Rare Investment
For those questioning the $9,000 price tag, Mansoor emphasizes the exclusivity of the build. “This guitar is rare. This guitar is going to continue to be rare because this is a Master Built Custom Shop run.”
While the price point targets serious collectors and professional musicians, the Baritone Surfcaster represents a new chapter in the evolution of the “Djent” sound—one that bridges the gap between retro surf-rock style and the bleeding edge of metal technology.
The Jackson Custom Shop USA Signature Misha Mansoor Baritone Surfcaster is available now through select premium dealers.
