If you have watched the recent Gibson Amplifier announcement, then chances are you would have seen the accompanying promo video. A video that appears to tease a new US Gibson Theodore model.
Are we about to see a new Gibson Theodore model?
During the official promo video for the new Gibson Falcon amp models, a Theodore model can be seen being played around the 13.45-minute mark.
Twin Humbuckers
It appears to be fitted with twin humbuckers, which would be a new model. The original 2022 release of this guitar came with P-90 pickups and was a limited run and was priced at $4999!
It was part of the Gibson Custom Shop “Archive Collection” of just 318 instruments.
This new model in the video also has block inlays, rather than the dot inlay of the Custom Shop run, and solid black body color, so it isn’t just a pickup swap.
Could this be a new US standard version of the Theodore?
It certainly looks like we may well see a new twin humbucker version of the Theodore. But will it still be allowed to be called Theodore? Theodore McCarty, or Ted as he is better known originally sketched the design on 18 March 1957, he detailed and signed this drawing for a new solid body instrument. Gibson then released it in 2022.
PRS Trademark Court Case
We know Ted McCarty’s estate and PRS have a court case pending that is contesting the trademark that Gibson has for Theodore, so could it slow down the release of this new model?
We will keep you updated if more news breaks on this potential new Gibson model.
