While the launch has been postponed to mid-spring, missing its debut at NAMM 2024, the anticipation is only growing.

After a 40-year wait, MXR has cracked open Randy Rhoads’ iconic “chip pan” pedalboard to recreate his legendary tone in a new Distortion+ pedal.

The project, a collaboration between MXR and Randy Rhoads’ sister, Kathy Rhoads D’Argenzio, has been a labour of love. With input from guitar legend Phil Demmel, the pedal promises to deliver the authentic Rhoads sound with exciting surprises.

Rhoads’ iconic “chip pan” pedalboard has been mysterious for decades. Its complex layout and mysterious controls have fueled countless speculations about the secrets behind his legendary tone. By meticulously analyzing the pedalboard, MXR’s tone wizards have captured the essence of Rhoads’ sound for the first time.

The new Distortion+ pedal is more than just a replica; it’s an homage to a guitar icon. With its August 20th release date fast approaching, guitarists everywhere are counting down the days until they can experience the magic of Randy Rhoads’ tone.

The project’s genesis dates back to 2022 when it was first revealed that Kathy Rhoads and MXR had been collaborating on this special pedal. The development process included a meticulous examination of Randy’s famed “chip pan” pedalboard, untouched for over four decades. This in-depth analysis has been instrumental in capturing the essence of Rhoads’ sound and legacy.

In her Instagram post, Kathy expressed both pride in the final product and disappointment at the delay in its release. She reassured fans, “It will be worth the wait.” Jim Dunlop, in a statement included in the post, cited “unforeseen circumstances” for the delay but emphasized the company’s commitment to perfecting the pedal.
