Seymour Duncan

Seymour and Cathy Duncan started rewinding and building pickups by hand in Santa Barbara, California, in 1976, at a time when almost no one sold pickups as a standalone product. The SH-4 JB Model humbucker, released not long after, became the company's most widely fitted pickup and still anchors the catalogue alongside newer designs and signature sets. Seymour Duncan has since expanded into pedals and amplifiers, but pickups remain the core of the business, still wound at the original Santa Barbara facility with around 120 staff. Most of what we cover is pickup swaps — guides to choosing a set, and the new humbuckers that show up in signature guitars from Jackson, Charvel and PRS. Here's what we've written.

Seymour Duncan FAQ4 questions

Which Seymour Duncan pickup should I get for a Les Paul?

The most common pairing is a 59 Model in the neck and a JB in the bridge, which keeps the neck warm and vintage voiced while giving the bridge a harder, more aggressive edge. If you want the whole guitar to stay vintage, a 59 pair or a set of Pearly Gates is the usual answer.

Are Seymour Duncan pickups made in the USA?

The company is based in Goleta, California, and builds its US range there. Seymour Duncan also produces more affordable lines overseas, so check the specific model rather than assuming.

What is the difference between passive and active pickups?

Passive pickups need no power and respond more dynamically to how hard you play. Active pickups, such as Seymour Duncan's Blackouts, use a battery powered preamp for a higher, more consistent output and a lower noise floor, which suits high gain playing.

Do new pickups actually make that much difference?

They change the voice of the guitar noticeably, but they do not fix a bad setup. Our own advice, and the reason we wrote a whole article about it, is that a wiring harness upgrade and a proper setup are often the cheaper first move.
