Revv Amplification has officially announced their latest collaboration with Juno-award-winning guitarist Joey Landreth: the Revv Dirt Dog Overdrive. Following the massive success of their D25 signature amplifier, this new pedal aims to shrink Landreth’s iconic, harmonically rich “modified-vintage” tone into a pedalboard-friendly format.

Born from the studio sessions of The Bros. Landreth’s latest album, Dog Ear, the Dirt Dog was designed to solve a common touring dilemma. Landreth sought to capture the volatile, “about-to-explode” magic of his favorite modified vintage Fender Princeton—a sound that is notoriously difficult to maintain on the road—and package it into a reliable, tour-ready enclosure.

The Sound of “Chewy” Breakup

The Dirt Dog isn’t just another tube screamer clone. It is a highly touch-sensitive overdrive characterized by what Landreth describes as “chewy” breakup. The pedal is designed to respond to the player’s pick attack and volume knob adjustments, moving seamlessly from a velvet-like purr to a full-throttle roar.

Revv founder Dan Trudeau worked closely with Landreth to ensure the pedal maintained three-dimensional mids and the sparkling top-end clarity required for Landreth’s signature slide work.

Simple Layout, Deep Control

While many modern pedals lean toward complex menus, the Dirt Dog keeps it old-school with four tactile knobs:

  • Gain & Level: The heart of the drive and output volume.

  • Tone: For general frequency shaping.

  • Bite: A specialized presence control that adds brilliance and “cut” to help the guitar sit perfectly in a dense mix.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What makes the Dirt Dog different from other Revv pedals?

While Revv is often known for high-gain “Generator” series tones, the Dirt Dog focuses on vintage-inspired, low-to-medium gain. It mimics a small vintage amp pushed to its limits rather than a high-gain modern stack.

Can I use the Dirt Dog as a clean boost?

Yes. With the Gain turned down and the Level turned up, the Dirt Dog acts as a refined booster, adding “weight” and harmonic complexity to your signal without necessarily distorting it.

Is it suitable for slide guitar?

Absolutely. Joey Landreth is world-renowned for his slide playing. The pedal was specifically “tone-tested” to ensure that the harmonics complement the sustain and vocal qualities of slide-guitar voices.

Does it work well with digital modelers?

The Dirt Dog’s high touch sensitivity makes it an excellent choice for adding “analog feel” to digital rigs or running into the front of a clean pedal-platform amp.

The New Standard for Soulful Drive?

The Revv Dirt Dog Joey Landreth Signature Overdrive successfully bridges the gap between vintage amp volatility and modern reliability. By focusing on “feel” and dynamic response, Revv has created more than just a distortion box; they’ve created an instrument that breathes with the player. Whether you are chasing the Landreth “Dog Ear” tones or simply need a musical, mid-forward drive that responds to your every move, the Dirt Dog is a heavyweight contender for your pedalboard.
