BluGuitar founder Thomas Blug has sparked controversy, accusing Blackstar Amps of copying their Amp1 design in the new Amped 1 unit. While both companies offer guitar amps with similar names, the real heat lies in Blug’s claim that Blackstar went beyond mere coincidence.
BluGuitar Accuses Blackstar of Design Theft
In a YouTube live stream on The Tone Lounge Podcast, Blug compared the disassembled internals of both amps, highlighting a striking resemblance in critical components.
Specifically, Blug pointed to custom-designed transformers and other elements within the power supply that he believes Blackstar directly copied.
Unique Design
Blug argues that the switched-mode power supply used in the BluGuitar Amp1 is unique and not found elsewhere in guitar amps. He claims Blackstar “stole” this design, a move that could have legal ramifications.
Switched-Mode Power Supply: A New Frontier in Guitar Amps?
Blug acknowledges that switched-mode power supplies are not uncommon in other electronics, but their use in guitar amps was a novel concept when the Amp1 project began in 2010. This innovation may be at the heart of the controversy.
What’s Next?
Blug’s accusations have ignited online discussions. Whether a legal battle ensues remains to be seen. However, this clash has spotlighted switched-mode power supplies in guitar amps and their potential impact on sound and design.
Blackstar
As yet, Blackstar has not officially responded to this online accusation. We will update you if they make an official response/statement.

Design steeling is crime.
All the best my friend Thomas. Get your right!
Hey guys,
Frank here from the Tone Lounge Podcast. Just FYI, the video where Thomas actually made the original claim and comparison came out in December of 2022:

Apparently nobody picked this up back then.
