Gibson revives the cult classic RD guitar, a 1970s design favored by Dave Grohl and Ghost. Featuring a unique 25.5" scale, it's perfect for drop tunings.

After months of anticipation fueled by social media teases, Gibson has officially unveiled the return of the RD electric guitar, a unique and often overlooked design from the late 1970s. This revival marks a significant moment for the iconic guitar manufacturer, bringing back a cult classic that has garnered a dedicated following, including rock heavyweights like Dave Grohl and Ghost.

Gibson RD Custom

The RD, originally launched in 1977, has been resurrected as part of the core Gibson Custom lineup, nearly 50 years after its initial release. Gibson CEO Cesar Gueikian hinted at the revival earlier this year, sparking excitement among guitar enthusiasts.

25.5″ Scale Length

This new RD Custom is a faithful recreation of the original, retaining its distinctive body shape and unconventional features that set it apart from other Gibson models. Notably, it boasts a 25.5-inch scale length, a departure from Gibson’s traditional 24.75-inch scale used in popular models like the Les Paul and SG.

This extended scale, more commonly found in guitars designed for brighter tones and tighter string tension, positions the RD as a unique offering within the Gibson catalog.

“Not only is this the first Custom Shop-built RD model, but it is also the first 25.5” scale length solidbody core model offered by Gibson Custom,” Gibson stated in its official announcement, highlighting the guitar’s special status.

Drop Tuning

Designed with modern players in mind, the RD is touted as “perfect for drop tunings and monster riffs,” catering to those who prefer lower tunings for heavier sounds. The guitar features a mahogany body with multi-ply top binding, a mahogany neck with a comfortable Medium C profile, and a bound fingerboard with 22 frets.

True to its Custom Shop pedigree, the RD is adorned with premium appointments, including mother of pearl block and split diamond inlays, gold hardware, and Gibson’s classic 490R and 498T pickups.

Despite its initial obscurity, the RD has found favor with notable musicians. Dave Grohl famously used an RD during the early days of Foo Fighters, reportedly tracking the iconic “Everlong” with it. Members of Ghost have also been seen wielding the instrument, and Krist Novoselic of Nirvana favored the bass version.

Research and Development

The RD, which stands for “Research and Development,” may not appeal to every guitarist, but its distinctive design and unique features have cemented its place in guitar history.

The Gibson RD Custom is available now for $5,799, offering players a chance to own a piece of Gibson’s unconventional past.
