Gibson Breaks Tradition: New 25.5-Inch Les Paul Custom Long Scale Debuts
Gibson Custom launches the Les Paul Custom Long Scale in Ebony, featuring a 25.5-inch scale length perfect for down-tuning and snappy note attack. Read our full breakdown.

Gibson Custom has officially expanded its Modern Collection lineup with a fascinating twist on an iconic formula: the Gibson Custom Les Paul Custom Long Scale.

For generations, the “tuxedo” aesthetic and thick, warm voice of the Les Paul Custom have been staples of rock, jazz, and metal history.

However, players seeking a tighter string tension or those who frequently experiment with drop tunings often had to look elsewhere. Gibson is directly addressing that audience by swapping out the traditional 24.75-inch scale length for a full 25.5-inch scale length—the standard typically found on Fender-style guitars.

Why the 25.5-Inch Scale Length Matters

The extra three-quarters of an inch completely changes how the instrument responds. A longer scale increases string tension, which translates into two massive benefits for modern players:

  1. Snappier Attack: Notes feel more immediate, articulate, and punchy, especially when playing fast, clean passages or tracking in the studio.

  2. Drop-Tuning Stability: If you tune down to Drop D, C, or lower, the strings won’t turn to “spaghetti.” The extra length keeps the lower strings taut, clear, and perfectly intonated.

Premium Craftsmanship and High-End Specs

Beyond the neck length, this guitar retains the classic DNA of Gibson’s pinnacle craftsmanship. It features a solid one-piece mahogany body paired with a two-piece plain maple top, offering a balanced blend of midrange warmth and high-end bite. To keep your shoulder happy during long sets, Gibson utilized its nine-hole weight relief system, shedding physical weight without sacrificing the guitar’s signature natural resonance.

The neck sports a comfortable Modern Medium C profile and uses a traditional long neck tenon (an extended tongue of wood gluing the neck deep into the body cavity) to maximize sustain. Classic visual appointments remain intact, including the multi-ply binding, an ebony fretboard with mother-of-pearl block inlays, and the prestigious split-diamond headstock inlay.

Powering the guitar is a pair of high-output Gibson humbuckers: a 490R in the neck and a 498T in the bridge.

Hand-wired to premium CTS potentiometers and a Switchcraft three-way toggle switch, the electronics package allows the guitar to pivot effortlessly from smooth, smokey jazz lines to high-gain metal mayhem.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How does the long scale change the feel of the guitar compared to a standard Les Paul?

The frets are spaced slightly further apart, and the strings will feel tighter if you use your usual string gauge in standard tuning. This creates a punchier, brighter tone with a faster “snap” when you pick a note.

Is this guitar good for heavy metal and drop tunings?

Yes, absolutely. The 25.5-inch scale length is highly sought after by modern metal players because it prevents low strings from losing clarity and going out of tune when drop-tuning.

Does the weight relief alter the iconic Les Paul sound?

No. Gibson’s engineered nine-hole weight relief targets specific areas to reduce physical strain on the player while preserving the core acoustic resonance and endless sustain the model is famous for.
