Jimmy Page has announced the Sundragon Nymph, the latest groundbreaking amplifier from his boutique company. Following the success of the original Sundragon and Super Dragon amps, this new low-wattage, small-footprint combo is designed to deliver Page’s iconic stadium-filling tones in a package ideal for home use, featuring a direct post-speaker line output – a first for Sundragon.

Page, who co-founded Sundragon in 2017 with former Marshall/Vox executive VP Mitch Colby and producer/guitar collector Perry Margouleff, recently revealed the Nymph tube amp.

The single eight-inch combo, equipped with two 12AX7 tubes, can switch between 1-watt and ¼-watt settings, making it perfect for practicing without disturbing the neighbours. Remarkably, it’s also capable of handling the powerful output of a Gibson EDS-1275 SG Double-Neck.

Page elaborated on the Nymph’s genesis: “Following the success of the original Sundragon and Super Dragon amplifiers, Mitch, Perry, and I discussed at great length what we would like to do next. The idea came to us that we should create a new amp that embodies the sonic qualities I cherish in my favourite amplifiers, but in a smaller package. One that would be suitable for playing at home, at levels that wouldn’t disturb the neighbours, while retaining the tonal characteristics of the larger amps I love. This would prove to be the greatest challenge Mitch and Perry had faced to date with Sundragon. It was no simple task, as certain elements of larger amplifiers are notoriously difficult to scale down.”

A Perfect Studio Amp?

After overcoming these design hurdles, the team added a crucial new feature: the direct post-speaker line output. “Put simply,” Page explained, “this means the amp can go from your bedroom to Madison Square Garden without missing a beat,” hinting at its versatility for both quiet practice and professional recording or live applications.

Page recounted his profound first experience with the Nymph prototype last November. “I had just performed the Rumble at the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame using a Super Dragon, and had returned to the dressing room when Mitch appeared with the prototype Nymph,” he recalled. “Despite the excitement and focus that comes with just having played, I was keen to try the amp out with my double-neck Gibson.”

He put the amp through its paces: “I put it through its paces, searching for familiar tones with the 6-string neck, and smiled. Then came the ultimate test: would this amp be able to stand up to the challenge of reproducing the increased output of the 12-string guitar? To my amazement, not only did it reproduce the 12-string sounds — it did so with flying colors. I just threw my hands up. I’ve got to tell you, that amplifier is absolutely extraordinary!”

Small amps are perfect for the recording studio, as the recently announced Peavey Joshua Homme Decade Too proves.
