Robert Keeley has truly created something special with the Monterey Fuzz, a versatile pedal that goes beyond typical “all-in-one” retro tone claims. It uniquely combines a fuzz, octave, vibe, and auto-wah, offering an impressive array of sounds and controls. The experience is further enhanced by the option to add an expression pedal for even greater real-time manipulation.
At its heart, the Monterey features a fuzz circuit equipped with vintage Fairchild semiconductor transistors. This delivers a smooth, dynamic, and genuinely vintage gain, perfectly suited for achieving classic “Jimi-style” tones. Many consider the fuzz effect alone to be worth the price of admission.
Vintage Flavor Modulation
Beyond the fuzz, the Monterey offers extensive modulation capabilities. A three-way selector in the center of the pedal allows you to switch between vibe, rotary, and wah effects. These are controlled by global depth and level knobs, and for more on-the-fly control, you can connect an expression pedal. Engaging the modulation mode also activates the octave circuit, which can be set for no octave effect, octave up, or octave down. However, a small switch on the back of the pedal allows you to swap these two sections, enabling you to explore how modulation can dramatically alter the characteristics of the fuzz.
