Universal Audio (UA) has officially unveiled the Volt 876, the new top-tier model in its acclaimed Volt series of USB audio interfaces. Positioned to challenge high-end multichannel competitors, the Volt 876 brings a powerful combination of classic analog tone modeling, professional-grade I/O, and advanced 32-bit/192 kHz conversion to the modern home and project studio.

Since their debut in 2021, the Volt interfaces have become a popular choice for musicians and producers due to their blend of affordability and access to inspiring recording features. The new Volt 876 dramatically expands this philosophy, evolving the series with features previously reserved for higher-priced gear.

Legendary Analog Sound on Every Channel

The core feature drawing attention is the per-channel analog processing. The Volt 876 is equipped with eight high-quality XLR combo preamp inputs, each featuring selectable Vintage Preamp Mode (emulating the warmth of UA’s iconic 610 tube preamp) and an integrated 1176-style FET Compressor.

This onboard 76 Compressor offers three distinct, analog-modeled modes, making it instantly adaptable for common recording sources: a fast mode for drums, a dedicated mode for vocals, and a setting optimized for guitars. This allows users to “print” classic studio compression and tube warmth directly during tracking, simplifying the workflow and adding character to every recording.

Professional Connectivity and Expansion

The Volt 876 is a robust 24-in / 28-out USB-C interface, ready for serious multichannel recording. Key features include:

  • Eight XLR Combo Preamps: Including two easily accessible inputs on the front panel with switchable Hi-Z for instruments.
  • High-Resolution Audio: Best-in-class 32-bit/192 kHz AD/DA converters.
  • Comprehensive Digital I/O: Features ADAT I/O (up to 16 channels at 48 kHz) for expanding preamp count—perfect for linking with systems like the Apollo Twin X—as well as Word Clock I/O and five-pin MIDI I/O.
  • Advanced Monitoring: Two independent headphone outputs, built-in talkback, and dedicated controls for monitoring level and input gain, all thoughtfully laid out on the 1U rackmount chassis.

Compatibility is broad, supporting Mac, PC, iPad, and iPhone, making it a flexible solution for any production environment. Crucially, the unit can function as a standalone ADAT preamp expansion module, adding significant value to existing studio setups.

Competing in the Professional Tier

While the original Volt series often competed with entry-level units like the Focusrite Scarlett, the Universal Audio Volt 876 steps into a higher market bracket with its extensive feature set and a price tag of around $1000. UA is now firmly targeting the professional multichannel interfaces offered by brands such as MOTU, Audient, and SSL.

The Volt 876 is currently available for pre-order and is expected to begin shipping this October. For producers and bands seeking a blend of classic UA analog character and modern, professional I/O in a single, well-designed unit, the Volt 876 presents a compelling new flagship option.
