A piece of cinematic history is soon to close its doors forever. Cassell’s Music, the San Fernando Valley institution that served as the unforgettable backdrop for one of the most beloved scenes in the 1992 cult classic Wayne’s World, is officially retiring. After 78 years in business, and 48 under the current ownership, owner Ed has announced the store will close its doors permanently in mid-July.
Iconic ‘Wayne’s World’ Music Store to Close
This news sends a ripple of nostalgia through fans of the film and local musicians alike. Cassell’s Music gained international fame as the store where Wayne Campbell (played by Mike Myers) finally purchases his dream Fender Stratocaster.
The scene is etched into pop culture, particularly for its iconic “No ‘Stairway.’ Denied.” sign and the hilarious moment Wayne is prevented from shredding the Led Zeppelin anthem.

A Cinematic Landmark Bows Out
While Wayne’s World was set in Aurora, Illinois, Paramount Pictures’ nationwide search for the perfect music store led them to Cassell’s Music in San Fernando, California.
Circus of Music
The studio was reportedly drawn to the store’s diverse instrument selection, spacious layout, and overall authentic appearance. Filming at the location took place over four days in 1991, transforming Cassell’s into the on-screen “Circus of Music.”
Ed, the longtime owner, shared his bittersweet announcement on social media, expressing gratitude to his “thousands of loyal customers.” “It is with both joy and sadness that I announce… I am retiring and closing down Cassell’s Music after more than 78 years in San Fernando,” he wrote. “After my ownership of 48 years, it’s time for me to enter into the next chapter of my life.”
He continued, reflecting on the store’s legacy: “I’ve enjoyed every minute of it and will greatly miss seeing you all from time to time. Thank you for your support for the store and your continued love of making music. I’m grateful we were able to start so many of you on your journey as musicians and hope you have benefited from the enrichment music provides to your life.“
Huge Discounts and Freebies as Cassell’s Liquidates Inventory
As part of the closure, Ed announced a massive liquidation sale. “I need to liquidate all the instruments and accessories, so everything is on huge discounts,” he stated. Customers are encouraged to “check Facebook every day or so, as I will be posting incredible deals as well as many, many freebies that I can give you.”
The news has already sparked an outpouring of memories from customers and fans. Phildz, a long-time patron, shared his emotional connection to the store: “From stopping in on my way home from Morningside in the 80’s, to meeting Mike Myers at the Wayne’s World filming, to taking both of my kids in there to expose them to real-life musical instruments. Can’t imagine life without Cassell’s Music. Thanks Ed! Party on!”
For those looking to grab a piece of musical history or simply find a great deal on an instrument, the coming weeks will be the final opportunity to visit Cassell’s Music.
Don’t miss your chance to say goodbye to a San Fernando Valley icon and a legendary Wayne’s World filming location before it’s too late.
