ZVEX Effects has just announced the limited-edition Sylvia Massy Woolly Mammoth fuzz pedal, a monstrous collaboration designed to deliver unparalleled low-end for bassists while also providing exceptional fuzz tones for guitarists.
This highly anticipated release features unique components and stunning artwork by the renowned record producer and artist, Sylvia Massy, known for her work with iconic bands like Tool, System of a Down, Prince, and Queens of the Stone Age.
Unrivaled Tone and Exclusive Features
The Sylvia Massy Woolly Mammoth stands out with its meticulously hand-selected and tested New Old Stock (NOS) 2N2222A transistors.
These crucial components ensure an unrivaled tone that sets this special edition apart. Beyond its sonic prowess, the pedal is a visual masterpiece, boasting stunning UV-printed artwork by Sylvia Massy herself.
Hand-Assembled
Each of the 60 available units is hand-assembled and hand-numbered, emphasizing the exclusivity and craftsmanship of this limited run.
Taming the Mammoth: Controls and Sonic Capabilities
The Woolly Mammoth offers intuitive controls that allow musicians to sculpt a wide range of fuzz textures:
- OUTPUT: Provides smooth and repeatable level settings for seamless integration into any rig.
- EQ: This versatile knob tilts the spectral response. Turning it left adds lows and softens highs, then mids, and finally reduces lows, offering precise tonal shaping.
- PINCH: Controls the harmonic structure by adjusting the pulse width of the waveform, leading to unique sonic variations.
- WOOL: Adjusts the amount of “fur” around the note, influencing the overall thickness and texture of the fuzz.

An Unusually Smooth “Gating” Action
The Woolly Mammoth’s unique circuit allows for incredible versatility in its fuzz character. In its leftmost position, the waveshape is symmetrical, producing a smooth, creamy fuzz. Turning the WOOL knob slightly introduces lovely intermodulation distortion.
Further clockwise rotation narrows the waveshape into asymmetrical pulses, resulting in a reedier and brassier tone. This also introduces an unusually smooth “gating” action, creating an eerie silence between notes – a feature that allows for percussive and dynamic playing.
Notably, the circuit preserves low-frequency pressure at most settings, with a frequency response extending several octaves below audibility. ZVEX Effects jokingly warns, “The subs will knock everything off your amps, so put the bottles on the floor. No kidding.”
