The Legend Returns: Dumble Amps Announces Official Reissues of the Overdrive Special, MegaPLX, and Tweedle Dee

The quiet, almost mythical resurgence of the Dumble name has officially entered a thrilling new phase: the company is now taking orders for reissues of its most famous guitar amplifiers.

Following years of speculation, the official Dumble website now lists three legendary models available for order: the Tweedle Dee, the MegaPLX, and the undeniable holy grail of guitar tone—the Overdrive Special.

A Revival Driven by Trademark Necessity

This is a monumental development in boutique guitar gear. The late Howard ‘Alexander’ Dumble was unequivocally one of the most influential and enigmatic amp makers of all time. As we explored in our retrospective piece, [Alexander Dumble: Relentless Pursuit of the Perfect Guitar Tone], legends like Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Mayer, Keith Urban, Joe Bonamassa, and Lowell George have championed his meticulous, hand-wired builds.

When Dumble passed away in 2022, fans and collectors widely assumed the prestigious brand was over. However, as we reported in [The Dumble Revival: A New Era for the Holy Grail of Guitar Amps?], the Dumble website was abruptly relaunched in late 2024. At the time, it featured only a teasing message promising that “new and exciting product lines and services” were in development.

What catalyzed this sudden comeback? The answer lies in legal logistics: the Dumble trademark was reportedly close to expiring. Producing new, official amplifiers became a necessity to retain control of the Dumble project and its iconic branding. For tone chasers, this legal necessity has birthed a long-awaited opportunity.

Inside the New Dumble Lineup

These new amps have been a long time coming, and the brand is leading with three of its most historically significant circuits.

The Overdrive Special

Unsurprisingly, the Overdrive Special (ODS) is the biggest draw of the new lineup. It is the amplifier Dumble is best known for, responsible for defining the elusive "Dumble tone" countless players seek. Beloved by the likes of Mayer, SRV, and Bonamassa, the Overdrive Special is globally renowned for its massive clean headroom, three-dimensional crystal cleans, and incredibly punchy, touch-sensitive overdrive.

According to the new listing, players can order the ODS in both head and combo iterations, complete with customizable options for the exterior covering and grille cloth.

The Tweedle Dee

The Tweedle Dee is a fascinating and historical addition to the roster. Originally, the Tweedle Dee was Dumble’s heavily modified take on the classic Fender Tweed Deluxe circuit. Dumble’s modifications introduced significantly increased dynamic control and a much tighter, more articulate low-end response. Famously, Dumble modified an original unit specifically for blues-rock titan Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

The MegaPLX

Rounding out the trio is the MegaPLX. This model is inspired by what may be the rarest amplifier Dumble ever built. Alexander Dumble reportedly built only three in his lifetime, with the final amplifier he completed being the MegaPLX 005.

In a surprising nod to modern digital workflows, Dumble has also launched an official plugin emulation of the MegaPLX. The digital counterpart has been meticulously captured by TONE3000 and NAM2, allowing players a digital taste of an amplifier that is virtually impossible to find in the real world.

Exclusivity Remains Intact

If you were hoping these new official reissues meant you could add a Dumble to your cart for the price of a standard production amplifier, you will need to temper your expectations.

These remain highly exclusive, custom-order builds. True to the brand's historic mystique, the website lists no prices. Instead, prospective buyers are simply met with an invitation to get in touch if they wish to commission a build.

Don't expect to see mass-production-run Dumbles lining the shelves of your local guitar shop anytime soon. But for those with deep pockets and an unrelenting pursuit of perfect tone, you now know exactly where to look.
