Fender has officially expanded its artist signature lineup with two menacing new models designed in collaboration with genre-hopping guitar virtuoso John 5.

The newly announced John 5 Ghost Telecaster and John 5 Phantom Telecaster take the timeless single-cut Fender silhouette and twist it into stripped-back, high-gain machines built specifically for modern rock and metal. While both models share a foundational DNA tailored to John 5’s exacting standards, they diverge dramatically in aesthetics, hardware, and bridge design to suit different playing styles.

The Ghost Telecaster: Arctic White Aggression

The John 5 Ghost Telecaster is designed to make an unmistakable visual statement on stage. Finished in stark Arctic White with a matching headcap, the guitar is accented with blood-red hardware, including red pickup covers, red dot inlays, and a striking red speed knob. A 1-ply mirror pickguard completes the highly reflective, stage-ready aesthetic.

Built for rock-solid stability during aggressive rhythm playing, the Ghost features a traditional hardtail 6-saddle Tele bridge equipped with a humbucking pickup cutout. Combined with deluxe cast/sealed locking tuners, the hardtail configuration maximizes string-to-body vibration transfer and ensures reliable intonation for tight palm-mutes and searing lead lines. The maple fingerboard features a comfortable 9.5-inch radius, giving the instrument a classic Fender feel tailored for precision.

The Phantom Telecaster: Stealth Black with Floyd Rose

For players who demand extreme vibrato capabilities, the John 5 Phantom Telecaster reimagines the classic shape as a stealthy, high-performance metal machine. Dressed in a unified all-black finish with matching black hardware and a 1-ply anodized pickguard, the Phantom is purpose-built for dramatic stage moments.

The standout feature of the Phantom is its Floyd Rose FRTS2000 double-locking 2-point tremolo system. Paired with a Floyd Rose Special locking nut, this floating bridge setup allows players to execute deep dive bombs, flutters, and wide pitch bends with absolute tuning confidence. To accommodate highly technical, fast-paced playing, the Phantom swaps the Ghost's maple board for a slick ebony fingerboard with a flatter, modern 12-inch radius, making rapid runs and wide bends feel effortless.

Signature Firepower and Playability

Despite their differing hardware and aesthetics, both the Ghost and Phantom share the core electronics and neck profile that define John 5's signature sound:

  • Dual DiMarzio D Activator Humbuckers: Both guitars are loaded with passive high-output pickups that deliver the tight low-end, razor-sharp attack, and crushing power normally associated with active electronics. They maintain organic dynamics and pristine clarity, even under extreme distortion.
  • Custom Medium C Neck: Both models feature a custom John 5 Medium C maple neck with a smooth satin finish and 22 narrow-tall frets, providing a fast, comfortable playing platform for both intricate riffs and complex chord work.
  • Stripped-Back Controls & Killswitch: Staying true to a performance-focused philosophy, both guitars feature a simplified layout consisting of a single master volume knob, a 3-position toggle switch, and a dedicated arcade-style killswitch. This layout allows for rapid, rhythmic stutter effects and instant dramatic silences mid-performance.

Custom Shop John 5 Phantom Telecaster

For collectors and tone purists seeking a masterclass in modern 6-string design, Fender is also offering the limited Fender Custom Shop John 5 Phantom Telecaster. Positioned as the ultra-premium aesthetic opposite of the Ghost Telecaster, every inch of this Custom Shop axe has been fine-tuned for John 5’s virtuosic technique and no-nonsense taste.

Unlike the standard nyatoh body, this top-tier model features a comfortably contoured alder body wrapped in a crisp white binding—the sole exception to its moody, completely blacked-out aura. From the anodized metal pickguard to the back of the neck and the near-bulletproof gloss urethane finish, this is an unabashedly aggressive take on Fender's slab-bodied icon, tailor-made for players whose metal-craving inclinations find vintage models a bit too tame.

Optimized for Maximum Versatility

John 5's genre-blending style requires an instrument that can do it all, from classic metal to Hee Haw-inspired Roy Clark country twang. To achieve this, the Custom Shop Phantom features a lightning-fast maple neck with a slim Modern C profile and glow-in-the-dark Luminlay side dot markers. It is paired with a flat-lam ebony fingerboard boasting a 10-inch to 14-inch compound radius and 22 medium-jumbo frets, ensuring comfortable chording down low and effortless, choke-free bends in the upper register.

Premium Hardware and Electronics

Taking the standard Phantom's tremolo a step further, the Custom Shop model boasts a fully recessed Floyd Rose Original tremolo, seamlessly transforming this Tele into a screaming hard rock machine.

The same signature DiMarzio D Activator humbuckers power the tone, tuned by DiMarzio with ceramic magnets to bring out distinct fundamentals and harmonics. These high-output pickups deliver big, active-style punch with no battery required, responding immediately to both feather-light touches and hard pick attacks with a broad, airy neck voice and a harmonically rich bridge. True to John 5's Spartan ethos, the control section is streamlined to its absolute essentials for unshakeable reliability: a single master volume knob and a kill switch.

Our Thoughts

I own the Fender Triple J5 Telecaster and use it a lot; these two new releases could be great for fans of modern T-style guitars. These standard models are made in Indonesia to keep prices down, but are still quite pricey.

Whether you summon the blinding spectral presence of the Ghost or embrace the shadowy depths of the Phantom, both of these signature Fenders are guaranteed to raise some spirits—and probably wake the neighbors, too. Just be warned: once you plug one of these supernatural shred machines in, your fingers might just become possessed by killer riffs you simply can't exorcise. Play it loud, and happy haunting.
