Origin Effects

Origin Effects builds in the UK and made its name with the Cali76, a compressor modelled on the behaviour of the 1176 studio unit rather than the usual pedal-format approach. The company has since applied the same thinking to preamps and drives with the RevivalDRIVE and the Halcyon. The pedals are expensive and unusually well regarded, which is a combination that tends to hold. We have covered the IR cab library alongside the hardware.

Origin Effects FAQ4 questions

How did Origin Effects start?

With one home-made pedal. Origin Effects was founded in 2012, but the story begins earlier: while repairing a pair of Urei 1176 studio compressors, founder Simon Keats set about designing a pedal that could produce the same sound, surpassing other stompbox compressors. That became the Cali76.

What is the Cali76?

Origin's studio-grade FET compressor for guitar, modelled on the 1176's behaviour rather than on typical pedal compression. The response it got from other musicians is what convinced Keats there was demand for genuinely high-quality guitar pedals, and it remains the product the company is known for.

What is the RevivalDRIVE?

Origin's amp-like overdrive — a pedal built to reproduce the way a valve amplifier's output stage breaks up, rather than to clip a signal in a box. It is significantly larger and more complex than a normal drive pedal, which is the direct consequence of that ambition.

Are Origin Effects pedals made in the UK?

Origin Effects Limited is an English company and builds its pedals in the UK. That, plus the component count in designs like the RevivalDRIVE, is why the pedals sit at the upper end of the market.
