Pigtronix

David Koltai and Brian Bethke met at Middlebury College in Vermont and founded Pigtronix in Brooklyn, New York, in 2004, aiming to build pedals that didn't just copy what was already on the market. The catalogue that followed leans experimental — compressors, fuzzes, delays, reverbs and synth pedals built around unusual circuit combinations rather than straight reissues of classic effects, with the Philosopher's Tone compressor and the Infinity looper among its longer-running products. Bond Audio, the parent company of D'Angelico Guitars and Supro, acquired Pigtronix in 2020 and has kept it running as its own line rather than folding it into either of those brands. New Pigtronix releases are what we cover most. Here's what we've written.

Pigtronix FAQ4 questions

What is Pigtronix?

A boutique pedal maker founded in Brooklyn, New York in 2004, which describes its aim as pushing the dialogue of musical effects forward — equal parts reverence for classic vintage sounds and pursuit of new ones. It went from what it calls dorm-room R&D to a recognised name in the sector.

What is the Philosopher's Tone?

Pigtronix's compressor and sustainer, and its best-known pedal — an optical compressor with a grit control and a blend, aimed at very long sustain without the pumping that gives most guitar compressors away.

What is the Pigtronix Mothership?

An analogue guitar synthesizer pedal that tracks your playing and generates synth voices from it, without a special pickup. It is characteristic of the brand: an unusual capability rather than a refinement of a standard effect.

Are Pigtronix pedals hand-built?

Pigtronix presents itself as a boutique maker developing pedals in collaboration with sound designers and engineers, and says nothing leaves its workshop until it satisfies them. Production scale has grown over twenty years, so treat 'boutique' as a description of the design approach rather than a guarantee of hand-wiring.
