Positive Grid launched in San Diego in the early 2010s with JamUp, a mobile app for practising guitar, before moving into desktop amp simulation software with the BIAS line in 2014 and its first hardware amps in 2016. The Spark, launched at NAMM 2020 and named the show's Best Guitar Amplifier that year, turned out to be the product that defined the company — a 40-watt practice amp built around a companion app that jams along with the player using its own AI backing-track generation. What is Positive Grid?
A music technology company founded in 2011 by a team it describes as musicians and tech obsessives, building software and hardware for guitarists. It started with tone-shaping software and moved into hardware with the Spark range.
What is a Positive Grid Spark?
A compact modelling practice amplifier that pairs with an app — it holds amp and effect models, streams audio over Bluetooth, and includes features that generate backing parts and pull chords from songs. It is aimed squarely at practising at home rather than at stage use.
What is BIAS FX?
Positive Grid's amp and effects modelling software, sold as a plugin and standalone application, with BIAS Amp as the amp-designer counterpart that lets you build and match amplifier models. Both predate the Spark hardware and remain separate products.
Do you need the app to use a Spark amp?
No, but you lose most of it. The amp works standalone with its onboard presets; the app is where the model library, the tone matching and the practice features live. Buying a Spark and never connecting it is buying a fraction of the product.
