Ola Strandberg, a mechanical engineer, spent years fixing guitars at a music shop as a teenager and getting sore shoulders and numb fingers from long rehearsals — problems he set out to actually solve rather than just live with. He began developing what he called the Ergonomic Guitar System in 2007, and the Boden, the headless guitar that came out of it, launched the company he founded in Uppsala, Sweden, in 2012. The headless design, contoured neck profile and proprietary hardware were built around comfort first, but the look ended up defining a whole strand of modern progressive and technical metal guitar. What makes a Strandberg guitar different?
It is headless, and built around ergonomics rather than tradition. The company's stated aim is ground-breaking comfort: no headstock, a very light body, an asymmetric neck profile and a body contour designed for how the instrument sits against the player rather than how it looks on a wall.
What is a Strandberg Boden?
The core model line, sold in several tiers and configurations including six, seven and eight strings and the Fusion and Essential variants. Reviewers have called the Boden Essential a modern classic; it is the model most players encounter first.
Are headless guitars harder to play?
No — the tuning hardware simply moves to the bridge, and string changes work differently but are not more difficult. The real adjustments are the balance, which is unusually neutral, and the fanned frets on many models, which take a little longer to get used to than the missing headstock does.
Where are Strandberg guitars made?
Strandberg is a Swedish brand with production handled at different facilities depending on the tier — the higher series and the more affordable ranges are not built in the same place. Its own product pages state the origin per model, which is worth checking given the spread of prices.
