Supro's original run made cheap, characterful amplifiers and guitars in Chicago from the 1930s onward — instruments that later turned up on records by Jimmy Page and Link Wray largely because they were what was lying around. What happened to the original Supro?
It was a Valco brand. Supro was founded in 1935 and produced instruments as a subsidiary of Valco; when Valco closed in 1968 the name fell out of use. It stayed dormant until it was revived in 2014, so any Supro you see new today comes from the modern era of the brand.
Who owns Supro now?
Bond Audio, a manufacturer of effects units. Under that ownership the range covers electric guitars, basses, amplifiers and pedals — considerably broader than the amps and student guitars the original company was known for.
What are Supro amps known for?
Small, low-wattage valve amps that break up early and have a distinctive, slightly compressed voice — the sound associated with early electric blues and with a well-documented list of recordings made through cheap 1950s and 60s American amplifiers. The modern Delta King and Blues King models are built around that reputation.
Are new Supro amps the same as vintage ones?
They are modern products carrying a revived name, not continuations of a production line that never stopped — there was a gap of more than forty years. Some current models are closely based on original circuits and others are new designs, so judge them on their own terms rather than as vintage equivalents.
