Walrus Audio
Walrus Audio started in Oklahoma City in 2011, a small operation that grew gradually rather than through a single breakout product — Colt Westbrook joined as employee number four in 2014, when the whole company was still just three people. It's since become one of the bigger names in independent pedal building, covering reverb, delay, modulation, fuzz and drive with a house look built around bold, illustrated enclosures rather than the plain-metal boutique norm. A private equity firm took a stake in the company in 2018, though it's stayed based in Oklahoma City. New pedal launches and firmware-driven updates to the Mako series are what we cover most. Where are Walrus Audio pedals made?
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Walrus builds in the USA and ships direct as well as through dealers; its own account of how it works is that prototypes go out to a chain of artists it admires before anything is sold.
What is the Walrus Slö?
A multi-texture ambient reverb with three modes and a sustain function, and the pedal that established Walrus's reputation for atmospheric effects. It sits alongside Fathom in the range — Fathom being the more conventional reverb of the two.
What is the difference between the Walrus Mako and Core series?
Mako is the high-fidelity, deeply programmable line — the ACS1 amp and cab simulator, D1 delay, R1 reverb and M1 modulation — with presets and editing over an app. The Core series is the more focused, single-purpose range, which is where Slö, Julia, Fathom and the drive pedals sit.
What does the Walrus Julia do?
It is an analogue chorus and vibrato with a Lag control that shifts the delay time of the modulated signal, and a blend that sweeps between dry, chorus and full vibrato. That blend control is what separates it from a conventional chorus pedal — you can get a true pitch vibrato out of it, not just a wobble on top of the dry signal.
