It’s a debate as old as digital guitar technology itself: tube amp or digital modeler? Can you really tell the difference in a live setting? Guitar legend Dweezil Zappa famously challenges guitarists to answer this very question, and it’s a challenge he recently embraced at a Masterclass here in the UK.
Dweezil Zappa’s Famous Question Puts Guitarists to the Test
Dweezil took on the formidable task of performing Edward Van Halen’s iconic “Eruption” not once, but twice.
One performance was through my Fractal Audio Systems modeler, utilizing a custom preset meticulously crafted. The other? A raw, untamed experience plugging directly into a classic Marshall JCM 900 Studio amp paired with a 4×12 cabinet.
The Challenge
The audio in the accompanying video isn’t a pristine studio recording. It includes mixed ambient camera mic audio from the Masterclass, reflecting a real-world listening experience.
This is crucial because it adds to the challenge: in a less-than-ideal listening environment, do the nuances of a tube amp still shine through, or can a digital modeler truly replicate that feel?
So, are you ready to take the ERUPTION Challenge? Watch the video, listen closely, and let us know in the comments: Can you tell the difference between the tube amp and the digital modeler? What gives it away for you?

A Deep Dive into “Eruption” Tones and Textures
Beyond just guessing which is which, this experiment offers a fantastic opportunity to dive deep into sound analysis. How do we dissect the intricate sound textures of “Eruption”? What gives away the subtle differences between a real tube amp pushing air and a sophisticated digital recreation?
In the video, he breaks down my approach to recreating Van Halen’s groundbreaking tones. We’ll explore:
- Attack and dynamics: How does each setup respond to varying picking dynamics?
- Harmonic richness: What are the characteristic overtones produced by a tube amp versus a modeler?
- Sustain and decay: How do the notes bloom and fade in each scenario?
- Feel and responsiveness: The intangible qualities that often define the tube amp experience.
Zappa also incorporated feedback from comments posted on Instagram, sparking even more interesting conversations and adding another layer to the challenge.
The Unmistakable Influence of Edward Van Halen
While Dweezil’s rendition of “Eruption” may not be note-for-note perfect (getting close to some of those treacherous parts was a victory in itself!), there’s no denying the enduring power of Edward Van Halen’s brilliance.
His guitar playing continues to inspire millions of guitarists worldwide, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible on the instrument.
