This conceptual mash-up, inspired by slide guitar virtuoso Ariel Posen’s personal instruments, promises an entirely new sonic palette for guitarists seeking versatility and raw power.
A “Jazzmaster on Steroids” with Strat Soul
Posen, known for his work with both a Masterbuilt Jazzmaster and a Mule Resophonic StratoMule, has collaborated closely with the Fender Custom Shop to bring his vision to life.
The result is a Stratocaster that, in Posen’s own words, is “like a Jazzmaster on steroids, but you still have that Strat essence.” This unique design seamlessly integrates the cherished qualities of his Jazzmaster into the familiar and ergonomically comfortable Stratocaster body.
Custom-Voiced AP-90 Pickups Redefine Strat Tone
At the heart of this signature model are two custom-designed AP-90 pickups, a collaboration between Posen and Fender’s renowned pickup guru, Tim Shaw.
These unique pickups are essentially tweaked Jazzmaster pickups housed in a Stratocaster format, delivering a distinct tonal profile unlike any traditional SSS Strat.

Posen explains the inspiration behind this innovation: “I love how the neck pickup on a Strat is always glossy and beautiful… But I often found it a little limited. The Jazzmaster brought in this new palette that was slightly more, but specifically the neck pickup. It was like a Strat neck pickup but a bit more open-sounding and, to my ears, a touch more musical.”
The AP-90s are wired to a three-way toggle switch, a departure from the standard Strat blade switch, and are controlled by master volume and tone knobs. This configuration allows the guitar to produce truly “gnarly tones,” ideal for the grumbly leads and rough rhythms synonymous with Posen’s blues rock style.
