Fender Musical Instruments Corporation (FMIC) announced a major leadership transition today, appointing Edward “Bud” Cole as its new Chief Executive Officer. Cole, a veteran executive and lifelong musician, will succeed Andy Mooney, who is retiring after a decade-long tenure that saw the iconic brand double in size.
The transition will begin on January 19, 2026, with Cole serving as CEO-Designate before officially assuming the role and joining the Board of Directors on February 16, 2026.
A Global Leader for a Global Brand
Cole currently serves as the President of Fender Asia Pacific (APAC). Over the last ten years, he has been credited with some of the company’s most aggressive and successful international expansions. His achievements include:
-
Regional Expansion: Leading Fender’s growth across 14 countries and establishing the APAC headquarters in Tokyo.
-
Retail Innovation: Spearheading the launch of the world’s first Fender Flagship store in Harajuku, Tokyo.
-
Operational Growth: Building direct-to-dealer operations in Australia and launching direct-to-consumer e-commerce platforms in China and Korea.
-
Product Success: Overseeing the “Made-in-Japan” product lines that have become global best-sellers.
Before joining Fender, Cole built an extensive resume in the luxury and lifestyle sectors, holding senior roles at LVMH, Ralph Lauren, and Pernod Ricard.
Honoring a Decade of Growth
Outgoing CEO Andy Mooney leaves behind a legacy of digital transformation. Since joining in 2015, Mooney oversaw Fender’s successful entry into subscription-based software and solidified its status as the world leader in musical instruments.
“Leading Fender has been a highlight of my career,” Mooney stated. “I’m excited to pass the baton to Bud and confident that under his leadership, Fender will continue to inspire players for generations to come.”
Mark Fukunaga, Executive Chairman of the FMIC Board, praised Cole’s readiness for the position. “Bud has been one of the most impactful leaders within our organization. His track record of building teams and elevating Fender’s presence makes him uniquely qualified to lead the next chapter.”
A Personal Connection
For Cole, the appointment is more than just a corporate promotion—it is a personal milestone. A lifelong guitarist, his first electric guitar was a Fender Made-in-Japan ’69 Thinline Telecaster reissue, which he still plays today.
“To lead Fender is the honor of a lifetime,” said Cole. “I’m committed to ensuring Fender continues to empower players everywhere, from beginners picking up their first guitar to the artists shaping the sound of today and tomorrow.”
