Gibson Custom Shop has announced the release of the Brian May SJ-200 12-String, a limited-edition acoustic guitar honoring Queen guitarist Sir Brian May’s musical legacy and passion for astronomy. Only 100 of these instruments will be crafted.
Brian May SJ-200 12-String Acoustic Guitar
This unique guitar features a premium tonewood combination of AAA rosewood back and sides and an AAA Sitka spruce top, finished in Vintage Sunburst. The 2-piece AAA maple neck boasts a rounded profile and walnut stringer, topped with a rosewood fretboard inlaid with agoya shell 8-point stars.
The headstock mirrors this celestial theme with an 8-point agoya shell star inlay, alongside the Gibson logo in mother-of-pearl and gold Grover Mini Rotomatic tuning machines.
It follows the announcement in 2024 that May is working with Gibson.
Sir Brian May’s influence is evident throughout the instrument’s design. He designed the planetary-themed pickguard, further emphasizing the astronomical connection. Adding to the guitar’s distinctive character is the reverse string mounting, with the thicker strings positioned above the octave strings, creating a unique sonic profile. The solid rosewood Moustache bridge features four 60s-style agoya inlays.
Fishman Matrix
For amplified performance, the Brian May SJ-200 12-String is equipped with Fishman Matrix electronics, making it ready for stage and studio use. The guitar comes with a hardshell case.
This special instrument is a tribute to Sir Brian May, whose contributions to rock music are as celebrated as his academic pursuits in astrophysics.
