Welcome back to our Pedal of the Week series! Looking for that elusive “mellow” tube-like overdrive that actually breathes with your playing? This week, we’re diving into a modern classic that has earned a permanent spot on pro pedalboards for over two decades: the Xotic BB Preamp.  If you are on the never-ending quest for the perfect guitar tone, you know how crucial a good drive pedal is.

Whether you need a totally transparent clean boost or a scorching, hot-rodded distortion, the BB Preamp consistently delivers. Let’s dive into why this iconic pedal deserves a permanent spot on your pedalboard.

Tone and Features: Breathing With Your Guitar

This pedal is essentially a versatile preamp that can act as a clean boost, a compressor, or a full-blown overdrive. I would highly recommend this simple, yet very versatile pedal to anyone who needs a great boost/drive for their rig.

The Xotic BB Preamp boasts four intuitive controls—Volume, Gain, Treble, and Bass—giving you the power to shape your tone with precision. It is by far one of the most mellow, tube-like overdrives on the market. Thanks to its incredibly sensitive dynamics, this pedal simply breathes together with your guitar.

When you step on it with all the knobs set to noon, you’ll immediately notice a pleasant, musical boost in the mid-frequencies. It isn’t a high-gain pedal that will instantly turn your clean channel into a saturated lead at noon, and that is exactly its secret weapon.

As Franko Torres mentions in his video review below, this pedal can easily “mold its way into any sort of mix”. Once you push the Gain knob past 12 o’clock, that smooth, creamy dirt really starts coming up. The addition of the active 2-band EQ (Treble and Bass pots) means you can use it as a standalone overdrive, a compressor, or a robust clean booster without your tone ever getting muddy or harsh.

I’ve always found this pedal super versatile, and it fits my rig very nicely. The simple, yet powerful EQ allows it to sing with both single-coil and humbucking pickups.  It is just a very musical drive pedal and covers a lot of ground.

Suggested Settings

Want to get the most out of your Xotic BB Preamp? Here are a few suggested settings to get you started:

  • The Transparent Clean Boost

    • Gain: 7 o’clock (all the way down)

    • Volume: 3 o’clock

    • Treble: 12 o’clock

    • Bass: 12 o’clock

    • Why it works: The BB Preamp offers up to +30dB of clean boost. This setting hits the front end of your tube amp hard, giving you pure, raw tube power without coloring your core tone.

  • The Classic AC/DC Crunch

    • Gain: 1 o’clock

    • Volume: 12 o’clock (or to match unity gain)

    • Treble: 1 o’clock

    • Bass: 1 o’clock

    • Why it works: Pushing the gain just past noon introduces that classic, gritty British-style drive, perfect for stadium-rock riffing.

  • The Smooth Lead (Vai / Petrucci Style)

    • Gain: 4 o’clock (cranked)

    • Volume: 1 o’clock

    • Treble: 12 o’clock

    • Bass: 1 o’clock

    • Why it works: Maxing out the gain provides tons of smooth sustain. It transforms your lead channel, giving you that liquid, hot-rodded distortion favored by virtuosos.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is the Xotic BB Preamp a clean boost, an overdrive, or a distortion?

It is all three! With the gain rolled off, it acts as a phenomenal clean boost offering up to +30dB of volume. Roll the gain up slightly for a sweet, tube-like overdrive, or crank it for a thick, hot-rodded distortion.

Does the BB Preamp color my tone?

While it does add a pleasant, slight mid-frequency push with all knobs at noon, it is highly transparent. Franko Torres points out that, instead of fighting your phrasing, the pedal acts musically and “adds a layer on top” of your playing.

What is the difference between the V1 and V1.5 BB Preamp?

You might see both versions floating around the used market. As noted in the video, the primary difference between the V1 and V1.5 is purely cosmetic (the enclosure and the knobs).  The internal circuit and that legendary tone remain exactly the same.

Can it fix a “muddy” sounding amp?

Absolutely. Because the Treble and Bass controls are highly dynamic and active, you can cut the bass and boost the treble to add clarity and bite to a dark or muddy amplifier.

Verdict

The Xotic BB Preamp is a modern classic for a reason. It is incredibly rare to find a pedal that serves equally well as an always-on tone sweetener, a massive clean volume boost, and a standalone lead channel. Because it never gets too harsh or muddy, it is one of the most reliable and musical overdrives you can buy.

If you are looking for a drive pedal that breathes with your playing rather than masking it, the BB Preamp gets our highest recommendation.

The current Xotic Effects Xotic BB Preamp V1.5 is the latest version and available from dealers worldwide.
