Guitar enthusiasts and Queens of the Stone Age fans have a new reason to be excited, as multi-instrumentalist Troy Van Leeuwen has let slip details of a forthcoming Squier 12-string Telecaster model. The revelation came during a recent Premier Guitar Rig Rundown, coinciding with QOTSA’s powerful return to the stage on their latest American tour.

During the Rig Rundown, conducted amidst the band’s back-to-back nights in Boston, Van Leeuwen was discussing a custom 12-string guitar crafted for him by Paul.

This unique instrument, described by Van Leeuwen as a “really good solid workhorse guitar,” boasts a distinctive “super wide” neck – a feature reminiscent of classic 12-string and double-six Burns guitars, designed to allow players ample finger room and prevent fret buzzing.

It’s Coming!

It was while praising this custom piece that Van Leeuwen dropped the bombshell: “I’m working with [Fender] on a Squier version of this, really.” He expressed a slight concern about revealing the information prematurely, but the cat is now out of the bag.

Van Leeuwen was inspired by the J Mascis signature Squier Jazzmaster model, which is an amazing guitar (yes, I’ve owned one) and was also a great affordable workhorse instrument.

More Signature TVL Gear

This guitar follows the signature GMI Public Address Systems 33F6 amplifier he announced earlier this year.

Troy already has a signature Fender TVL Jazzmaster model (available on Oxblood and Copper Age finishes) and previously had the Yamaha TVL SA503; again, I won both these models, and they are superb guitars.

Squier Signature Guitar

The news indicates that Squier, Fender’s more accessible brand, is set to release an “affordable” electric 12-string based on Van Leeuwen’s custom Telecaster-style axe.

This development is significant for players looking to explore the rich, shimmering tones of a 12-string without the premium price tag often associated with such instruments.

The inclusion of the wider neck, a feature Troy clearly values for playability, would also set this Squier model apart in the affordable 12-string market.

While specific release dates, pricing, or detailed specifications are yet to be officially announced by Fender or Squier, Van Leeuwen’s casual revelation has ignited considerable anticipation within the guitar community.

All we have to go on currently is the video and the original Fender Custom Shop guitar shown in the interview.

This collaboration promises to bring a versatile and uniquely playable 12-string option to a wider audience, directly inspired by the sonic wizardry of one of rock’s most innovative guitarists.

Kudos to Fender for potentially making this happen!
