We have a brand new set wound for us by Ash at Oil City Pickups of Deep Six Double Cream Alnico 6 humbuckers with four-conductor wiring to be won.
Since Oil City Pickups was established in 2011, I have always pushed the boundaries of innovation: I was the first UK pickup winder to introduce mixed magnet humbuckers, the UK winder to produce ‘off the shelf’ tapped single coils, the first UK winder to build vintage accurate replica Firebird pickups and the first UK winder to build Humbucker sized Firebird pickups. Not to mention features like graduated field magnet arrays in my Neo-X-Breed, truly vintage sounding noiseless P90s with my Eliminator soap bar and dog ear – and first HB-sized P90s that customers tell me actually sound like proper full-sized P90s with our Mighty Ninety range.
Now, I built the Deep Six. The Deep Six has thrown away the PAF rule book and follows my Airship Trooper in using a seldom used custom wire grade … but it goes further still and uses one of the most underrated and ignored types of alnico magnet … Alnico 6.
Used in vintage Danelectro pickups, Alnico 6 has a power level somewhere between Alnico 5 and ceramic… not as ‘chainsaw rude’ as Alnico 8 or as ‘metal’ as Ceramic. It is warm with a big dose of clarity and a tight bass … but without Alnico 5’s mid-scooping. If you like a full range of frequencies with a comfortable amount of ‘go’ on tap while still keeping that PAF thing, then the Deep Six is for you.
