Blackstar DA5 Ruby: Doug Aldrich’s Signature Tone in a Studio-Sized Tube Combo

Blackstar Amplification has officially announced the release of the DA5 Ruby, a highly anticipated signature tube guitar amplifier combo developed in close collaboration with legendary guitarist Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake, Dio, The Dead Daisies).

Designed to pack the fierce character of his award-winning, 100-watt DA100 Ruby head into a portable, low-wattage package, the DA5 Ruby is engineered for modern players who demand authentic tube feel, tactile response, and advanced direct-recording options without the need for earth-shaking stage volumes.

Big Stage Soul, Studio-Friendly Volume

Built on the foundation of Blackstar’s award-winning HT-5R Mk III platform, the DA5 Ruby features a genuine push-pull tube power stage utilizing a single 12BH7 power tube and an ECC83 preamp tube.

Unlike typical single-ended low-power tube amps, this push-pull architecture replicates the physical response, sag, and compression of a traditional 100-watt head.

Power Reduction

While the amplifier pushes a formidable 5 watts, a built-in power reduction switch transparently drops the output down to 0.5 watts for whisper-quiet bedroom shredding.

"It's killer!" says Doug Aldrich. "It's got all the tones from the original DA100 Ruby but in a 5 Watt combo and I love it so much!"

To project this massive tone, Blackstar and Aldrich co-developed the 12-inch Aldrich 50 loudspeaker (rated at 50 watts). This custom speaker provides enhanced headroom, authoritative low-end depth, and pristine high-end presence.

Four Voices, Infinite Tone Shaping

The internal signal path of the DA5 Ruby is derived directly from the DA100 Ruby, organized into a versatile two-channel layout with four distinct voices:

  • Clean Channel: Features dedicated Volume and Tone controls with two selectable voices ranging from bright and chimey to warm and boutique.
  • Overdrive Channel: Features independent Gain and Volume controls, alongside a full 3-band EQ (Bass, Middle, Treble) and Blackstar's patented Infinite Shape Feature (ISF), allowing players to sweep seamlessly from tight American-style high-gain to woody, mid-forward British roar.

Next-Gen CabRig Integration & Silent Recording

For modern home studios, the DA5 Ruby is equipped with Blackstar’s state-of-the-art CabRig IR-based speaker simulation. This onboard DSP emulates the complex physical interactions of cabinets, microphones, and room acoustics, letting players toggle between three customizable presets directly from the control panel.

The amp features an internal load protection system, meaning you can safely disconnect the speaker cabinet for completely silent recording.

Modern Connectivity & Control:

  • USB-C Audio Out: Send pristine, multi-channel digital audio straight to your DAW.
  • XLR CabRig DI Out & 1/4" Headphone Out: Easy connection to PA systems or headphones.
  • FS-22 Footswitch Included: Hands-free control over channels and voices on the fly.
  • Studio-Quality Reverb: Beautiful, lush onboard digital reverb.

Premium "Ruby Red" Aesthetics

The DA5 Ruby is wrapped in a striking Deep Ruby Red tolex, accented by matching "chicken head" knobs, a brushed black control panel, premium toggle switches, and a rugged cast-alloy metal Blackstar badge.

To sweeten the deal for collectors, each limited-edition amplifier ships with a signed certificate of authenticity and a custom tin containing Doug Aldrich’s personal Dunlop guitar picks.

Verdict & Score

Our Rating: 8.3 / 10

The Blackstar DA5 Ruby is a spectacular home-and-studio adaptation of a monster signature rig. While the $849.99 price tag sits on the premium side for a 5-watt combo, the inclusion of genuine push-pull tube architecture, a custom 12-inch Aldrich speaker, CabRig DSP, and premium collector-grade aesthetics makes it worth every penny. It successfully bridges the gap between classic analog feel and digital convenience.

What is the advantage of a push-pull design over a single-ended design in a 5-watt amp?

Most low-wattage tube amps use a single-ended circuit, which can sound flat and lack dynamics. The DA5 Ruby's push-pull design uses a dual-triode 12BH7 tube to mimic the power-amp compression, sag, and rich harmonic response of a massive 100-watt stage amplifier, even at whisper-quiet volumes.

Can I use this amplifier for silent recording without a cabinet connected?

Yes! Thanks to its built-in internal load protection, you can safely unplug the speaker and record silently using the USB-C or XLR CabRig outputs without damaging the tube circuitry.

What is the Blackstar ISF control?

ISF stands for Infinite Shape Feature. It is a patented control that shifts the response of the entire EQ network. Turning it fully counter-clockwise yields a tight, aggressive American tone with scooped mids, while turning it clockwise delivers a warm, mid-heavy, classic British voice.
