Pedalboard real estate is under siege once again, but this time, your tone is winning the war. Akron, Ohio, tone wizards EarthQuaker Devices have officially unveiled a surprise double-header drop: the Plumes Jr MOSFET Mod Limited Edition Small Signal Shredder and the Blumes Jr MOSFET Mod Limited Edition Low Signal Shredder.

Both fan-favorite overdrive circuits have been shrunk down into sleek, board-friendly "Junior" enclosures and hot-rodded with a fiery new MOSFET clipping voice. If you've been praying to the gain gods for maxed-out tube drive in a box that leaves room for your tuner, your prayers have been answered—just don't wait too long, because these are strict Limited Edition releases.

The Face-Off: Plumes Jr vs. Blumes Jr

Both pedals share the same compact footprint, control layout, and hot-rodded internal architecture, but they target different frequency domains and sonic needs.

  • Plumes Jr MOSFET Mod ("Small Signal Shredder"): Based on EQD's legendary take on the classic Screamer circuit, the Plumes Jr is engineered to make guitars slice through any mix like a hot knife through butter. It excels at pushing clean amps into sweet breakup or tightening up high-gain rhythm channels.
  • Blumes Jr MOSFET Mod ("Low Signal Shredder"): Designed for bassists, baritone players, and low-end tone connoisseurs, the Blumes Jr keeps your fundamental sub-frequencies intact while smothering them in delicious harmonic saturation.

What’s the Big Deal About the MOSFET Mod?

The original Plumes and Blumes pedals blew up in popularity thanks to their versatile 3-way clipping toggle switches. For these limited Jr runs, EarthQuaker tossed out Mode 3 (the asymmetrical silicon diode arrangement similar to a stock Screamer) and replaced it with a custom MOSFET clipping mode.

Swapping silicon for MOSFET gives Mode M a vastly superior dynamic response that feels and sounds like a cranked, high-gain modern tube amp—smooth, open, commandingly loud, and dripping with upper-harmonic richness.

Breakdown of the 3-Way Clipping Modes

Both pedals feature the same versatile 3-way toggle switch for three totally distinct overdrive flavors:

  1. Mode L (Symmetrical LED Clipping):
    • The Vibe: The crunchiest, wildest setting on the board.
    • How it Sounds: Utilizes a pair of light-emitting diodes to deliver an articulate, mid-focused, and compressed drive with massive output volume and less compression than typical overdrive circuits.
  2. Mode N (No Clipping / OpAmp Drive):
    • The Vibe: Pure, unadulterated power.
    • How it Sounds: Completely bypasses the soft-clipping diodes for a straight-up OpAmp boost. This provides the highest output volume and a wide-open, full-frequency response. Keep the Gain low for a crystalline clean boost or push it to slam your amp’s preamp.
  3. Mode M (MOSFET Mod Clipping – NEW!):
    • The Vibe: Modern tube amp magic in a micro-footprint.
    • How it Sounds: Replaces the old stock silicon diodes with MOSFET clipping. Expect a rich, focused, and harmonically complex overdrive with added low-end girth and fluid pick dynamics.

Onboard Controls

Despite their mini dimensions, EarthQuaker kept the full-sized, intuitive control scheme intact:

  • Level: Controls the overall output volume (and trust us, these Jr boxes have a lot of headroom).
  • Gain: Adjusts the amount of drive, taking you anywhere from subtle chime to thick, saturated dirt.
  • Tone: A sculpted control sweep—turn left for boosted bass, stay in the middle for balanced midrange, or crank right for extra treble slice.

What's the difference between Plumes Jr and Blumes Jr?

The Plumes Jr (Small Signal Shredder) is voiced for electric guitar with mid-range focus and crisp upper-end bite to cut through mixes and tighten high-gain channels. The Blumes Jr (Low Signal Shredder) is designed for bass, baritone guitar, and synthesizers with enhanced low-frequency response that preserves sub-bass fundamentals under heavy drive.

What does the MOSFET clipping mode do?

The MOSFET clipping mode replaces the stock silicon diodes with MOSFET technology, delivering a rich, harmonically complex overdrive with superior dynamic response that mimics a cranked high-gain tube amp. It provides added low-end girth and fluid pick dynamics compared to the original silicon diode arrangement.

How many clipping modes do these pedals have?

Both pedals feature three clipping modes: Mode L (LED for crunchy, articulate drive), Mode N (OpAmp boost for clean, full-frequency response), and Mode M (MOSFET Mod for modern tube amp-like saturation with harmonics).
