EarthQuaker Devices
Jamie Stillman started building Fuzz Face clones in his basement in West Akron, Ohio, taking the circuit apart and reassembling it until he understood every part of what made it sound the way it did. EarthQuaker Devices grew out of that habit; by 2019 the company had 50 employees in a 15,000-square-foot Akron facility and had won the US Small Business Administration's Exporter of the Year award for shipping to 47 countries. It's kept its reputation for pedals with distinctive, often odd names and a house style built around fuzz, reverb and modulation rather than straight amp-in-a-box overdrives. Akron, Ohio. EQD has built in Akron since Jamie Stillman founded it in 2004, and the domestic build is part of the brand's identity — it is one of the larger US boutique pedal makers rather than a design house with overseas production.
What is the EarthQuaker Plumes?
EQD's take on the Tube Screamer-style overdrive, with three clipping modes covering symmetrical, asymmetrical and a louder, more open op-amp voice. It became the company's biggest seller because it answers the most common pedalboard question at a price well under the boutique average.
What is the Afterneath?
A reverb built for long, unnatural decays rather than room simulation — its Drag control changes the spacing of the delay taps that make up the reverb, which lets it slide from a normal ambience into something closer to a synthesiser. It is the pedal most associated with the brand.
Does EarthQuaker Devices offer a warranty?
EQD has long advertised a lifetime warranty on its pedals to the original owner, which is unusually generous for the sector and reflects the fact that it repairs in-house in Akron. Check the current terms on the company's own site before relying on it, as warranty policies do change.
