How did one of the most famous guitars in rock history get its name? The story is as legendary as the guitar itself.

In 1968, a young Billy F. Gibbons and his friends owned a 1936 Packard. They loaned the car to an aspiring actress friend, Renee Thomas, who needed a vehicle to drive from Texas to Hollywood for a movie audition. Doubting the vintage car would even make it out of Texas, the group was shocked when it successfully delivered her to California—where she landed the part.

Joking that the car must have divine connections, they dubbed the Packard "Pearly Gates." When Thomas asked what she should do with the vehicle, Gibbons advised her to sell it. She wired the money back to Texas, and Gibbons’ cut was exactly $250.

That very same day, Gibbons received a tip about a rancher outside of town selling a near-mint 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard. Gibbons drove out to the ranch, opened the case, and bought the guitar on the spot with his $250 check. When word got back to Thomas, she famously declared, "It’s going to make divine music."

The heavenly nickname was transferred from the car to the guitar, and rock history was made.

Every scratch, ding, and faded contour has been meticulously recreated. The guitar was artfully relic'd by the Murphy Lab, ensuring the nitrocellulose lacquer finish and all hardware—including the ABR-1 Historic no-wire bridge, Stop Bar tailpiece, and Kluson Deluxe single-line tuners—match the exact current condition of Gibbons' beloved axe.
