Catalinbread has unveiled its latest innovation, the Talisman Ghost, a pedal that reimagines the iconic EMT 140 plate reverb by simulating not one, but two of these legendary units working in parallel. This groundbreaking design delivers a unique, chorus-like effect to the reverb trail, pushing the boundaries of traditional reverb sounds.

The Talisman Ghost builds upon the legacy of the original Talisman, known for its faithful recreation of the EMT 140’s rich, spacious reverb. However, Catalinbread has taken a bold step forward, exploring the hypothetical scenario of two EMT 140s operating in modulated tandem.

“Here at Catalinbread, we are big on creating devices that serve as exacting models of vintage equipment, but part of reimagining old technology is stepping outside the boundaries of possibility,” the company stated. “Our Talisman Ghost takes a step outside of even that framework to answer the question: what would happen if you configured two EMT 140 plate units to work in modulated tandem?”

The result is a “luscious chorus-like effect, applied only to the reverb trail.” This effect is achieved by meticulously modeling the diffusion characteristics of a real EMT 140, amplified by the presence of a second virtual unit. This configuration, a rarity even in professional studios, produces a “slick post-process doubling effect that lends a sense of dynamics to a normally static reverb decay.”

Essentially, the Talisman Ghost simulates the sound of two massive 600-pound plates interacting, creating a depth and movement previously unattainable in a single pedal. The modulation adds a captivating spatial dimension, transforming a static reverb into a dynamic, evolving sonic landscape.

“Skilled modulation greatly enhances the spatial effect of the reverb,” Catalinbread explains. “Imagine playing and hearing the sounds of two plates blending harmoniously to give you a sense of depth and movement. This isn’t just a reverb, it’s a sophisticated post-process doubling experience that adds tremendous dynamics to your sound, inspiring and entertaining.”

The Talisman Ghost offers a versatile range of reverb possibilities, whether aiming for subtle warmth or experimental textures. This pedal honors the legacy of vintage technology and demonstrates a creative approach to pushing its limits.
