A whirlwind week for progressive metal giants Mastodon has seen the departure of co-founder and guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds after 25 years, and the lightning-fast introduction of YouTube guitar guru Ben Eller as his replacement. Eller made his live debut with the band at Tool In The Sand in the Dominican Republic, delivering a 17-song set with minimal preparation.

The sudden change comes amidst a flurry of questions, including the circumstances surrounding Hinds’ exit and drummer Brann Dailor’s visible black eye.

However, the band has assured fans that their 2025 tour plans remain firmly in place.

“Can you learn 17 Mastodon songs immediately?” bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders quipped, introducing Eller to the crowd at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Punta Cana. “Please give some love – stage right – say hello to Mr Ben Eller.”

Stuff Mastodon Does

Eller, known for his popular YouTube channel boasting over 506,000 subscribers, where he provides instructional content and in-depth analyses of various artists, including Mastodon, stepped into the role with remarkable speed.

His previous work, including a breakdown of Mastodon’s seminal album “Leviathan” and a “Stuff Mastodon Does” video from 2019, suggests he was already well-versed in the band’s complex material.

Stuff Mastodon Does

The band’s official statement regarding Hinds’ departure emphasized a mutual decision after a successful 25-year run. “We’re deeply proud of and beyond grateful for the music and history we’ve shared and we wish him nothing but success and happiness in his future endeavours,” the statement read.

Hinds’ unique and often unpredictable guitar style, blending brutal metal with elements of chicken pickin’ and other diverse influences, will undoubtedly be missed. His partnership with guitarist Bill Kelliher formed one of metal’s most formidable guitar duos.

While Eller’s technical prowess is undeniable, as evidenced by his seamless performance at Tool In The Sand, the question remains: can he bring his own distinct flavor to Mastodon’s sound?
