Lost Fuzz Legend Found: EHX and JHS Unleash the Aggressive Big Muff 2 Pedal!
The lost EHX Big Muff is found! The Dual Op-Amp Big Muff 2 (JHS x EHX) delivers a unique, aggressive fuzz voice based on Bob Myer's forgotten 1970s schematic.

Music history has been rewritten with the announcement of the EHX Dual Op-Amp Big Muff 2, a new fuzz pedal resulting from a historic collaboration between Electro-Harmonix (EHX) and JHS Pedals. This aggressive new voice in the legendary Big Muff lineage is based on a forgotten, hand-drawn schematic by original Big Muff inventor, Bob Myer.
Discovered in 2021 during research for the definitive visual history book, Made On Earth For Rising Stars: The Electro-Harmonix Story, the blueprint, labeled "BIG MUFF USING (2 DUAL OP AMPS)," had been buried in Myer's workshop for nearly five decades. It represents Myer's personal attempt to utilize emerging Op-Amp technology in the 1970s to reimagine his iconic circuit.
"This wasn't just another circuit. It was Bob Myer’s own attempt to reimagine the original transistorized Big Muff circuit using the new cutting-edge Op-Amp technology," the official announcement explains.

A Sharper Edge: The Big Muff 2 Sound
JHS Pedals, spearheaded by Josh Scott, breadboarded the design exactly as drawn, immediately recognizing its unique sonic qualities. The Big Muff 2 offers a significant departure from the famous "sweet, violin-like sustain" of the original Big Muff.
What makes the Big Muff 2 different?
- Aggressive & Cutting Tone: It pushes into far more aggressive territory than its predecessors.
- Unique Circuitry: Featuring a different clipping arrangement and an extra gain stage compared to the later, more famous late 70s Op-Amp Big Muff (designed by Michael Abrams).
- Pronounced Low-End & Midrange: It delivers the most pronounced low-end and midrange of any EHX Big Muff, making it exceptionally loud and present in a mix.
Even EHX founder Mike Matthews was impressed, reportedly admitting the prototype had "something special," despite its departure from his preferred traditional voicing.
Familiar Controls, New Sonic Weapon
The pedal maintains the classic, straightforward control layout that Big Muff enthusiasts love:
| Control | Function |
|---|---|
| VOLUME | Controls output level. |
| SUSTAIN | Controls the amount of fuzz and sustain. |
| TONE | Controls the overall frequency balance (darker to brighter). |
| POWER | Requires 9VDC center negative (18mA). |

Part of a Larger History: The EHX Story
The launch of the Big Muff 2 is intrinsically linked to the release of Made On Earth For Rising Stars: The Electro-Harmonix Story, a massive visual history co-written by Josh Scott and official EHX archivist Daniel Danger. The book details the chaotic, creative genius of EHX and its eccentric founder, Mike Matthews.
