Iconic Japanese Guitar Brand Fernandes Files for Bankruptcy

Fernandes Guitars, the Japanese company known for its affordable import models and the innovative Sustainer pickup, has ceased operations and filed for bankruptcy.

A Legacy of Quality and Innovation

Founded in 1969, Fernandes carved a niche by offering high-quality replicas of popular American guitars at competitive prices. Their Burny line offered Gibson replicas, while the Fernandes line focused on Fenders. They also made the popular elephant-shaped ZO travel guitars.

The Rise and Fall of a Guitar Giant

Despite its initial success, Fernandes faced increasing pressure from the growing second-hand market and intensifying competition.

The company's financial situation deteriorated, leading to its withdrawal from the US market over a decade ago.

The Enduring Legacy of the Sustainer Pickup

While guitar production ceased, the Fernandes Sustainer pickup remained a sought-after product. This innovative pickup uses electromagnetism to create infinite sustain, offering a unique tonal palette favored by experimental guitarists like Robert Fripp (King Crimson) and Steve Hackett (Genesis).

The Fender Ed O´Brien Stratocaster is also equipped with this system.

The Future of Fernandes

With over 50 years of history and a loyal following, the question remains: will another company acquire Fernandes? Their iconic pickup, rich history, and artist associations could make them an attractive acquisition for a larger brand.
