IK Multimedia

Enrico Iori and Davide Barbi, both computer science graduates and musicians, founded IK Multimedia in Modena, Italy, in 1996, at a point when software-based music tools were still a fairly new idea. Their first release, GrooveMaker, was a loop-remixing package from 1998; the company has since grown into mastering plugins, virtual instruments, mobile audio interfaces and room-correction tools, alongside the amp-modelling software guitarists mostly know it for. TONEX, its AI-driven tone-capture platform, now spans a plugin, a pedal and dedicated hardware, and is the product line we cover most. IK now runs offices in Italy, the US and the UK. Here's what we've written.

IK Multimedia FAQ4 questions

What does IK Multimedia make?

Music software and the hardware that runs it — guitar amp and effects modelling, recording interfaces, monitors, microphones and software instruments. The company says it has been developing these technologies since 1996, and its brands include AmpliTube, TONEX, iRig, iLoud, ARC and T-RackS.

What is AmpliTube?

IK's guitar amp and effects modelling software, one of the earliest of its kind and still one of the most widely used. It runs as a plugin or standalone and is sold both as a general package and as officially licensed collections of specific manufacturers' amplifiers.

What is TONEX?

IK's amp and pedal capture system — software and hardware that models a specific rig from a recording of it, in the same territory as Kemper profiling and Neural Capture. TONEX pedals put those captures on the floor, and the TONEX platform includes a large user-shared library of captures.

What is an iRig?

IK's line of compact interfaces for connecting guitars, microphones and MIDI gear to a phone, tablet or computer. The original iRig is what made mobile guitar recording practical, and the name now covers a wide family of small interfaces rather than a single product.
