Warm Audio

Bryce Young started building vintage-style preamp kits in his garage in 2007 and sold them on eBay before turning the hobby into Warm Audio in 2011, based out of Austin, Texas. The company's whole premise is recreating classic studio hardware at a fraction of the original price — the WA-87 and WA-47 microphones echo Neumann's U 87 and U 47, and the WA-76 and WA-2A compressors do the same for the 1176 and LA-2A — built around custom transformers and hand-inspected before shipping. That same approach carried over into guitar pedals, recreating well-known overdrive and compressor circuits at a lower price than the originals. We cover most new Warm Audio pedal releases. Here's what we've written.

Warm Audio FAQ4 questions

What is Warm Audio's approach?

Recreating expensive classic studio gear at a price working musicians can reach. The company says it was founded in Texas in 2011 by Bryce Young, who started in his garage with the aim of building products sonically equal to renowned designs of the past but affordable. It hand-tests its inventory in Texas.

Does Warm Audio make guitar pedals?

Yes — the pedal line is a more recent addition to a catalogue that started with microphones and studio outboard, and it follows the same logic: recreations of famous circuits at accessible prices. The Centavo, its take on the Klon Centaur, is the best-known example.

Are Warm Audio products made in the USA?

Warm Audio is a Texas company and states that it hand-tests all inventory in Texas, but that is a different claim from full domestic manufacture. Component sourcing and assembly are what keep the prices where they are; read the product page rather than assuming from the address.

What is the WA-87?

Warm Audio's version of a Neumann U 87-style large-diaphragm condenser, and the product that made the brand's name. It is the clearest statement of what the company does — a studio standard that normally costs thousands, offered at a fraction of it.
